JFK Cargo Area D

The Project

Work consisted of construction and installation of 463 LF of a 90” sewer bypass and replacement of the existing 90” Interceptor Sewer for the NYC Department of Environmental Protection at Cargo Area D.

The Solution

Subsurface work around JFK can yield very high volumes of water due to the sandy subsurface conditions. 18 wells were installed along with a 2,000 Gallon Per Minute dewatering system to create a safe and dry working environment for the sewer relocation. There also happened to be high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds in the area which required treatment. Utilizing a bag filter and carbon absorption system, the water was treated for discharge to local waterways.

The Challenge

The appearance of significant volumes of Iron Bacteria resulted in fouling of the system and unforeseen, constant maintenance. To resolve the issue, and reduce costs to our client, we added Redux 350, an Iron Sequestrant to alleviate the oxidization of iron bacteria, thus allowing our systems to once again function effectively.
