Share
The project aims to improve vehicular access to and from JFK Airport. It will add a fourth lane in both directions, reconfigure ramps, and retrofit some bridges along a 4-mile stretch of the Van Wyck Expressway.
The Project
The project will increase the Van Wyck Expressway capacity between the Kew Gardens Interchange and JFK Airport. It will also address operational, geometric, and structural deficiencies on the expressway.
The Solution
As of October 2023, Tri-State has reached about the halfway point of the micropile and drilled-shaft scope after installing more than 150 micropiles to support the new bridge abutments and sewer structures and drilling hundreds of drilled-shaft locations for the new retaining wall and noise barriers. We have also successfully performed six high-capacity verification load tests and six proof load tests.
The Challenge
Some challenges include creating the bond zone in dense sand and working closely with the general contractor, their consultant, and NYSDOT to meet the tight project schedule.
