Dewatering

Construction dewatering is the process of removing groundwater or surface water from a construction site to create a dry working area to allow for excavation, foundation laying, or other construction activities to take place.

Dewatering can be accomplished through various methods, including pumping, well-point systems, deep wells, and sump pumping. The most appropriate method will depend on the site conditions and the desired outcome.

Dewatering is an important part of construction site management as it allows work to be carried out safely and efficiently. It also helps to prevent damage to structures and the surrounding environment, and can improve soil stability and strength. Properly managing the discharge of dewatering effluent is also important to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Deep wells are often used in areas where the water table is high or where the soil is permeable, allowing water to seep into the excavation area.

The wellpoint system consists of a series of small-diameter pipes with built-in screens that are installed vertically into the ground. A vacuum pump is used to draw water through the screens and into the wellpoints, which lowers the water table and creates a drier work environment for construction activities.

Ejectors work on the principle of creating a vacuum in the suction line, which draws water from the surrounding soil into the ejector, and then discharges it to the surface. Ejectors consist of a suction pipe, a discharge pipe, and a nozzle. The nozzle is located at the bottom of the suction pipe and creates a jet of water that creates a vacuum in the pipe. This vacuum draw water and soil particles into the ejector and then up to the surface.

Groundwater Treatment

In construction dewatering, the recovered groundwater is often contaminated and requires pre-filtration prior to discharge. Our experts specialize in designing custom temporary or permanent treatment systems based on the state and/or local discharge standards surrounding the levels of contamination and estimated flow rate. TCC facilitates groundwater testing to determine what types of treatment are necessary to safely discharge water.
