Project Summary
Tri-State performed complex foundation and support of excavation operations for the Dyer Avenue Deck-Overs Project as a subcontractor to MLJ Contracting LLC (MLJ). The Dyer Avenue Deck-Overs project represents the first stage in the construction of the new Midtown Bus Terminal, replacing the existing 75-year-old functionally obsolete facility with a world-class transportation hub. It will serve as a bus staging area during the construction and will ultimately be transformed into 3.5 acres of publicly accessible open green space. The project involved critical infrastructure improvements in a dense urban environment adjacent to active transportation facilities and heavily traveled corridors in Manhattan, NewYork. Given the constrained site conditions and sensitivity of surrounding structures, a highly engineered horing system was installed to maintain safe, stable excavation throughout all phases of construction.

Tri-State Work Continued
The support of excavation system comprised over 110 steel piles installed across multiple series, including composite 13.375”x0.514” outer piles with 10.75”x0.595” inner pipe sections and standard 10.75”x0.500” piles. Lateral earth pressure was managed through tie rods with wales and struts, as well as grouted tiebacks anchors in both 1-3/8” and 1-3/4” diameters. All anchors were performance and proof tested to design loads. Rock anchors were also installed and tested were subsurface conditions required. In addition, four 13.375”x0.514” diameter caissons were installed to approximately 30 feet to support a crane pad, and were load tested for lateral capacity.
Earthwork operations included approximately 7,115 cubic yards of excavation to various subgrades. Lagging was installed between soldier piles as excavation advanced, providing continuous face retention across over 12,670 square feet. TSCC’s coordination with MLJ reflects our commitment to constructing a better world through quality foundation work and safe, efficient execution.
This project demonstrated Tri-State’s expertise in SOE and complex heavy civil construction operations within highly constrained and technically demanding urban infrastructure environments.
